The NRA First Steps Pistol Orientation (FSP) course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a specific type of pistol safely.  This NRA approved course is four hours long. It combines classroom learning and range time learning.  Students will understand and be able to demonstrate proper gun safety and shooting fundamentals before they step on the range.  Students will learn to shoot either revolvers or semi-automatic pistols.  Small classes allow each student to receive plenty of individual attention from the instructor. Students will have all of their questions answered before moving to live fire exercises.

Students will learn:

  • Rules for safe firearm handling and storage
  • The anatomy and function of a pistol (parts and operation)
  • Ammunition components and their function
  • Shooting fundamentals and technique
  • Range rules
  • How to clean and lubricate a pistol
  • Continued opportunities for skill development

Students will receive:

  • NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook
  • NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure
  • Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet
  • Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination
  • First Steps Course completion certificate

Students are responsible for providing their own:

  • Eye protection and ear protection.  Eyes and ears are available for rent at most shooting ranges.
  • Revolver or pistol – .32 Caliber to .45 Caliber.  Firearms are typically available for rent at the range if the students does not own a firearm.
  • 100 rounds of factory ammunition.  Reloaded, foreign or surplus ammunition is NOT permitted.  Ammunition is available for purchase at most shooting range.
  • Full toe shoes and a baseball style cap for use at the range (highly recommended).  Low-cut shirts are not recommended.
  • Range fees.
