NRA Personal Protection in the Home (PPIH) teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family; and provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense.  Small classes allow each student to receive plenty of individual attention from the instructor and shall leave no unanswered questions before moving on to exercises using live ammunition.
This is an NRA approved course.  Students shall expect to shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition.

Students will learn:

  • Basic defensive shooting skills
  • Strategies for home safety
  • How to respond to a violent confrontation
  • Firearms and the law
  • How to choose a handgun for self-defense
  • How to choose ammunition for self-defense
  • Continued opportunities for skill development

Students will receive:

  • NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook
  • NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure
  • Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet
  • Basics of Personal Protection in the Home Student Examination
  • Course completion certificate
  • A voucher for 10% off on merchandise from A & G Gun Leather

Students are responsible for providing their own:

  • Eye protection and ear protection.  Eyes and ears are available for rent at most shooting ranges.
  • Revolver or pistol – .32 Caliber to .45 Caliber.  Firearms are typically available for rent at the range if the students does not own a firearm.
  • 100 rounds of factory ammunition.  Reloaded, foreign or surplus ammunition is NOT permitted.  Ammunition is available for purchase at most shooting range.
  • Full toe shoes and a baseball style cap for use at the range (highly recommended).  Low-cut shirts are not recommended.
  • Range fees.

The NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home course is for law-abiding adult* citizens, as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law, and experienced shooters (shooters able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm) to maximize what can be learned from this course.  Proof of shooting experience can be one of the following: NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification, or passing the Pre-Course Assessment.
